Whatever is broadcast near you, and no antenna changes that number. Enter your address on the FCC reception map before you buy: it lists the stations that reach your address and how strong each signal arrives. In a city that is often thirty or more with the subchannels counted; well outside one it can be a handful.

What about the 200-mile antennas?

Digital television fades out where the noise floor overtakes it, not at a fixed distance. Across the 1,032 full-power stations in the FCC's file, the furthest predicted service area in the country stops short of 97 miles — and that is measured with the antenna outdoors, 30 feet up. An indoor panel behind a wall does considerably less. Range figures on antenna packaging are marketing, not measurement, which is why you will not find one on this page.

Do I need the amplifier?

It helps when the signal is weak and it can hurt when the signal is strong, because an amplifier boosts interference along with the broadcast. Try the antenna without it first if your address shows strong stations. Every antenna compared here includes one either way.

Where should I put it?

A window facing your transmitters, as high as the cable reaches. Then run the TV's channel scan again — the scan is what builds the channel list, and it does not update itself when you move the antenna. Most people who conclude an antenna is bad have simply not rescanned.
