Leave it on beep and it chirps the instant your dog starts up, which for a lot of dogs is the whole intervention. Move to beep-and-vibration and the nudge arrives with the sound. The two static modes sit behind the same button, and plenty of owners never reach them. What you notice after a week is not silence — the dog still announces a knock at the door — it is the barking at nothing that goes. The strap survives a wet walk, and a fortnight goes by between charges.

Will it fire when the neighbour's dog barks?

The better collars want two signals before they act. The PetSafe, the Pawious and the Patpet all say they need the bark sound and the vibration in your dog's own throat together; Garmin states its system cuts false corrections from scratching or a dog nearby. A collar that triggers on sound alone will punish your dog for someone else's noise.

What size dog do these fit?
